Cave dwellings just south of Roosevelt Lake.in Tonto National Park. These dwellings housed the Salado Indians in the 1300s with upper and lower dwellings, with 20-40 rooms, respectively. By the 1400's they were totally abandoned. This park area covers approximately two miles and is host to an abundance of wildlife including; the poisonous gila monster, 4 types of poisonous snakes, 40 mammals (including 14 bat species) and 6 species of amphibians. We have yet to meet a gila monster but that is probably because we are in deep sleep as they are nocturnal creatures.
MIAMI: we went through Miami on our way back to Mesa. Miami is 75 miles east of Phoenix. In the 1870's the area became a huge Silver Mining destination and by the 1880's copper surpassed gold & silver mining, due to the drop in price of gold/silver. Today, the town has a population of approximately 1700, is very quiet and many buildings are vacant, some under construction & renovation with several antique shops selling local artifacts.
This is the scene behind the small Mexican take out we stopped at (great food but business was not booming - partially due to construction on the street in front). The entire area for miles is a scene of a once booming town.
On the north side is a huge manmade mesa of bleached white dirt. Originally, copper mining was underground; early 1900's above ground open pit mining began.
Some mining still takes place.
