Just an hour drive north to ASTORIA from Seaside.
The Astoria-Megler Bridge, built in 1966, bridged the gap between Washington & Oregon. Astoria became the primary trading post area in the Pacific NW and became the first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific Coast.

The bridge spans the Columbia River over the deep water port. The Columbia bar ( a set of marine coastal hazards) is known as the Graveyard of the Pacific with strong westerly winds, going from calm to life threatening within five minutes. The Columbia bar includes Cape Flattery (NW tip of the Olympic Peninsula), Cape Scott (N tip of Vancouver Island) and the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island. Since 1792 - 2,000 shipwrecks have been documented.
