More on the Verde Canyon Railway . . .
The 1911 railway was built in just one year of hard labour, 250 men with axes, picks, over 200 mules and dynamite.

Above is an ancient dwelling of the Sinagua people - built in the 12th century.

The canyon is host to a wide variety of wildlife, trees and cacti. Bald Eagles. Golden Eagles and Blue Heron make the canyon their home. Wildlife includes mule deer, antelope, javelina and at times, mt lions and elk.

The water level is higher than seen in a number of years. Mistletoe was an item of interest to lots of photo buffs . . . it adapts to a variety of trees and is a parasite. Seen particularly in winter as it remains green, standing out among the bare branches.

Spring and fall colors would make this train trip a totally different experience. Due to heavy rainfall this winter, the desert blossoms should be spectacular.
